Our principles
- We disclose data only where there is a valid legal basis under German law, such as a court order or a formal request from a competent German authority. We answer requests from foreign bodies only through international mutual legal assistance.
- Every request is checked for jurisdiction, form and scope. We reject or narrow unclear or overly broad requests and take legal action where necessary.
- We inform affected users about a request as soon as and to the extent that this is legally permitted. For organisation accounts we also inform the organisation.
- There are no voluntary disclosures and no backdoors.
What we could disclose – and what not
Stored content of emails, contacts and calendar events exists with us only in encrypted form; we do not have the keys. We therefore cannot disclose this content in readable form.
Where available and legally ordered, the following could be disclosed:
- account data (EineEmail address, contact address if any, plan, creation time),
- metadata within the retention periods (sender, recipients, times, sizes, IP addresses; logs at most 30 days),
- encrypted data that is unreadable for us.
Please note: email from other providers is briefly processed in plain text before we encrypt it, and email to recipients without encryption leaves our system in plain text. A legally ordered interception of future communication could capture these unencrypted messages. End-to-end encrypted messages between EineEmail users remain unreadable even then.
Transparency report
We publish an annual transparency report with the number of requests received, their type and the number of cases in which data was disclosed – to the extent publication is legally permitted.
